78% smaller, requiring 30% less energy than predecessor; features new band combinations and U.S. public safety network certification.

Boise, Idaho — Sept. 20, 2023 — Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions, today announced the re-designed outdoor Cradlepoint W1855-5GC Wideband Adapter. Adding to Cradlepoint’s innovative 5G portfolio, the W1855 enables enterprises to future-proof connectivity investments as they adopt Standalone (SA) 5G networks and commit to stronger sustainability goals. Purpose-built to require less design materials and operational energy than its predecessor while adhering to the latest 5G standards, the outdoor Cradlepoint W1855-5GC Wideband Adapter ushers in the latest generation of Wireless WAN networking with a goal of supporting global sustainability objectives.

As the enterprise adopts innovative 5G connectivity solutions to transform business operations and prevent disruption, the increasing volatility stemming from climate change has highlighted the need to implement technology that mitigates further negative environmental and business impact. According to a Gartner press release, “86% of business leaders see sustainability as an investment that protects their organization from disruption.” [1] Designed for distributed sites that require secure cellular connectivity or failover in the event of a primary link disruption, the W1855-5GC Wideband Adapter enables the enterprise to guarantee connectivity while furthering sustainability goals. Key benefits include:

    • Connectivity offerings for the expansion of 5G: The refreshed modem features the latest 5G standards with 3GPP Release 16 specifications, providing customers with expanded carrier aggregation and band combinations as service providers grow their 5G services. The W1855-5GC adapter is certified on most first responder networks in the United States.*
    • More sustainable design: Compared to its predecessor, the W1855-5GC Wideband Adapter is 78% smaller and 74% lighter, requiring 30% less energy when under load. In addition, the device is securely packaged with 84% less packaging, which is 100% plastic free. The aluminum housing reinforces Cradlepoint’s commitment to sustainably sourced and recycled materials.
    • Centralized device management and visibility: With Cradlepoint NetCloud Manager, lean IT teams can successfully manage the deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of each device from centralized locations, reducing unnecessary complexity and costly on-site visits.
    • Streamlined installation: At half the size and weight of previous outdoor adapters, the stylized W1855-5GC eases installation for field personnel.

“At Uplink, we are using the current generation of outdoor adapters to support critical communications as a part of our network service to radio stations. The re-design of the new W1855, with its smaller size and lighter weight make it easier to transport and deploy to those locations,” explains Thomas Rupp, Head of IT at UPLINK. “NetCloud Manger for centralized management allows us roll-out and manage our network without onsite staff. As a company that values streamlining processes, we look for the same sustainability and efficiency that Cradlepoint brings to our IT team.”

“In addition to continuing to adhere to the latest 5G technology standards, Cradlepoint is also committed to exploring new avenues to help customers further additional business goals,” said Donna Johnson, CMO of Cradlepoint and Ericsson’s Head of Enterprise Wireless Solutions Marketing. “Sustainability is top of mind for enterprise globally, including at Cradlepoint and Ericsson, and we’re thrilled to partner with companies to create a more collective effort toward reducing energy consumption and wasteful packaging and design.”

Cradlepoint’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Cradlepoint and its parent company Ericsson, have set an ambition to be Net Zero across its value chain by 2040 and its most important contribution to climate change mitigation is delivering an energy efficient portfolio that will help break the energy curve of mobile networks, reducing customers’ energy use, energy cost and carbon emissions.

All Cradlepoint routers and adapters are packed using plastic-free and recyclable shipping material. Reducing the impact of used hardware is also important to us. The Cradlepoint Recycling Program collects, repurpose, and recycles products around the globe.

Cradlepoint’s connectivity solutions enables LA County to scale secure and efficient pop-up networks, setting standard for widely accessible voting capabilities

Boise, Idaho — Aug. 1, 2023 — Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions, today announced that Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) has leveraged Cradlepoint to modernize the network infrastructure of one of the largest and most diverse counties in the United States, creating a new paradigm to enhance accessible voting capabilities to eligible voters.

Before 2020, the voting infrastructure and registration processes across Los Angeles County remained widely unchanged from the 1960’s. The county recognized the need for a complete voting overhaul — technological and procedural — to address the significant demographic changes impacting equitable voting access. On the technological front, the RR/CC sought innovative, pop-up networking solutions capable of reliably and securely connecting voting technology across widespread and remote locations, while enabling centralized, real-time monitoring and management capabilities.

In November 2020, RR/CC approached their existing connectivity vendor Cradlepoint to test and deploy Cradlepoint’s 5G-optimized Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) solutions, in the form of NetCloud Manager and E3000 routers, which enabled highly scalable, reliable, and secure pop-up networks across approximately one thousand voting centers during the presidential election. Key solution capabilities and outcomes include:

    • Centralized network management: With NetCloud Manager, RR/CC’s in-house IT team successfully managed the deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting of each network device from centralized locations, reducing unnecessary complexity and on-site visits to quickly scale networks ad hoc for future election-related initiatives.
    • Consistent enforcement of security policies: NetCloud Manager and E3000 routers enabled the team to take a multi-layered approach to security with policy-based VPN tunneling and certificate-based authentication, keeping sensitive voting data secure to remain compliant with state and federal laws and maintaining the integrity of the democratic electoral process.
    • Continuous, flexible network connectivity: E3000 routers utilize ethernet, Wi-Fi, and 5G/LTE connectivity to enable multiple transport layers, which kept voting technology operational across locations, despite any primary network disruptions or failures.

“Los Angeles County recognized the pressing need to modernize our network infrastructure to enhance the accessibility, transparency, and security in the electoral process, but limited IT resources impacted our ability to deploy and manage distributed networks at scale,” said Aman Bhullar, CIO at LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. “Our partnership with Cradlepoint  enabled this transformation, helping us to not only accomplish our mission with innovative solutions, but also to set a new standard for widely accessible voting capabilities.”

“In today’s digital world, pop-up connectivity services have become vital to operate in new places and ways, and the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is a great example of how LTE/5G connectivity and Cradlepoint’s 5G-optimized solutions seamlessly work together to help the office adapt to the modern needs of its constituents,” said Bryan Wood, Sr vice president of sales, North America for Cradlepoint. “We are honored to partner with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk office to ensure eligible voters have access to polling locations, no matter their whereabouts in the county during an election period.”

Visit the Cradlepoint website for more information about its pop-up network solutions.

Enterprises extending beyond conventional fixed site connectivity will benefit from SASE

Boise, Idaho — July 12, 2023 — Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions, today announced its phased rollout strategy for the industry’s first 5G-optimized Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) solution designed for the enterprise and purpose-built for Wireless Wide Area Network (WAN) deployments. With unique cellular capabilities and the simplicity of Cradlepoint’s cloud-based management platform, NetCloud Manager, Cradlepoint 5G SASE features zero trust, cellular intelligence along with cloud and SIM-based security to address the challenges and threats faced by today’s extended enterprise.

As enterprises evolve beyond fixed sites to include mobile and IoT, they are looking to the flexibility and agility of Wireless WAN and 5G. These geographically dispersed networks, combined with the proliferation of connected devices and ill-fitting network security solutions, can significantly increase security vulnerability. With IoT device deployments projected to reach 30 billion by 2027, and the perennial IT talent shortage, the seamless integration of 5G-centric SASE solutions to manage Wireless WAN infrastructure is critical.

As an industry leader in Wireless WANs and with the recent acquisition of Ericom, Cradlepoint is uniquely positioned to deliver a comprehensive 5G-optimized SASE solution that enables organizations to seamlessly match the security challenges of extended networks. Cradlepoint 5G SASE will be delivered in phases over the next 12 months:

    • Cradlepoint Cellular Intelligence: Available today, cellular telemetries, such as signal strength and data plan usage, can be leveraged for SD-WAN traffic steering. As 5G Standalone (SA) networks become mainstream, Cradlepoint’s network slicing capabilities will work with carriers’ services to offer prioritization and slice-based isolation.
    • SIM-based Security: Cradlepoint offers SIM management and GPS tracking to secure the physical devices and to detect rogue movement. Cradlepoint’s vision for the future is to work with carriers for tighter SIM-based security using SIMs as the basis for authentication, regardless of the connecting hardware.
    • Connect-and-Go Zero Trust Security: Creating WANs in just a few clicks, 5G SASE replaces complex VPNs. Zero trust shrinks the lateral attack surface — devices connected to a Cradlepoint router are immediately dark to the outside world and other sites. Soon, this capability will be delivered from the cloud, offering an easier deployment option.
    • Cloud-Delivered Security: Ericom’s full suite of SSE solutions, including SWG, CASB, RBI and DLP, protects users browsing in fixed and mobile environments from threats such as phishing and ransomware. Cradlepoint will integrate these capabilities with existing zero trust and SD-WAN solutions into Cradlepoint NetCloud for a single pane of glass user experience for IT teams.

“As enterprises evolve and become more diverse in terms of their connectivity to branch, mobile and IoT, they need a more 5G centric approach to security and management. An updated approach to SASE is essential for today’s modern organization to defend against elevated attack surfaces,” said Todd Krautkremer, CMO, Cradlepoint. “Current SASE solutions are not optimized for 5G. Cradlepoint’s strategy is to provide lean IT organizations with a security solution that is aligned with the realities of a changing business and network profile. “

“A full SASE solution that is optimized for 5G will allow IT organizations to manage network security, network access policies, and observability across wireless connectivity in any hybrid WAN,” said Shamus McGillicuddy, vice president of research at Enterprise Management Associates (EMA). “Cradlepoint’s vision encompasses the definition of SASE for these hybrid WANs.”

Cradlepoint security portfolio is augmented by leading industry security solutions through Cradlepoint Technical Alliance Partners.

Cellular router paired with comprehensive security service and connect-and-go ease enables lean IT organizations to manage large IoT installations

Boise, Idaho — June 27, 2023 — Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions, today announced the launch of the S700, a multipurpose IoT router designed to provide a rich zero trust security service to enterprise customers. Coupled with Cradlepoint NetCloud Exchange Secure Connect, the S700 provides a comprehensive cloud-managed network solution to safeguard IoT devices as today’s attack surface expands and adversaries increasingly target connected devices.

There are an estimated 41.76 billion IoT devices that exist globally in 2023. With shipments of these devices expected to grow at 18% annually, IoT solutions are driving device sprawl despite not being equipped to use modern security methods. As today’s attack surface expands and cybercriminals become more sophisticated, it is clear that many organizations are not prepared to address IoT security needs. For IT teams to effectively manage distributed IoT networks, organizations need an efficient zero trust approach to security. This includes easing the setup and maintenance of IoT solutions, while enabling advanced fine-grained policies to allow access for third-party management of devices.

The S700 and NetCloud Exchange from Cradlepoint delivers a robust zero trust solution for IoT that removes deployment complexity and is ideal for enterprise lean IT scenarios. Key benefits include:

    • Connect-and-go Zero Trust: Any IoT device connected to the router is immediately dark to public scans and other internal sites. Access policies are easily defined so IoT devices communicate only with their authorized resources on a least-privilege basis.
    • Efficient WAN creation: Orchestrated with only a few clicks through a cloud-based management system, the S700 removes deployment and management complexity and easily builds effective zero trust encrypted tunnels over cellular and wired links.
    • Small Router with Big Security: IoT devices connected to a small router can still have access to full modern security services including zero trust. The S700 adds simplicity by offloading the security processes to a services gateway, which holds the security policies, manages router updates (including security patches), and orchestrates processes.
    • Third-party access protection: Over 60% of WANs are now serving outside customers and suppliers, so protecting third-party access to IoT equipment has broad implications. With the Cradlepoint solution, fine-grained policies can be added to the zero trust services gateway allowing third-party access to all or part of the management system of an IoT device behind the Cradlepoint router.

“As the network expands and we see more sophisticated cyber threats, it’s evident that IoT networks will need to be rearchitected,” said Chantal Polsonetti, vice president, industry analyst, ARC Advisory Group. “By off-loading security from the perimeter to a distributed zero trust architecture, Cradlepoint is offering IoT devices access to a collection of robust security services that have traditionally not been available on typical IoT routers.”

As a multipurpose IoT router designed for the enterprise, the S700 connects light industrial, smart city, IoT and portable devices over cellular, Wi-Fi and wired links. Offering a wide variety of connectivity options through LTE, two Gigabit Ethernet ports for wired connections and dual band Wi-Fi 6 options, the S700 also adds advanced features, such as active GNSS/GPS for asset tracking, GPIO pins to control and monitor external sensors.

“IT teams have more responsibilities and less time, even as organizations deploy more connected devices,” said Donna Johnson, senior vice president of marketing, Cradlepoint. “Last year, we launched NetCloud Exchange as an advanced security and SD-WAN extension to Cradlepoint NetCloud to make managing security threats easier for those teams. The S700 with zero trust capabilities shows our commitment to 5G—and security-first services to support enterprise WAN transformation—at scale.

The Cradlepoint S700 will be available for purchase widely on July 12. For more information, please visit https://cradlepoint.com/product/endpoints/s700-series/

Boise, Idaho — May 23, 2023 — Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions, has published the findings from its global The State of Connectivity survey in cooperation with Censuswide. According to the report, 70% of U.S. organizations have been financially impacted by the loss of connectivity in the last year, with 30% citing a negative impact to their brand reputation.

Businesses across the globe have experienced significant changes that have required business leaders to quickly adapt and become more resilient; from a global pandemic to inflationary pressures, supply chain disruptions and climate change. Business leaders are looking for improvements in connectivity to address these unexpected changes and navigate this new environment.  Survey respondents agree, with 96% of C-suite level executives believing that good connectivity would make their company more resilient to unexpected changes. This highlights how connectivity is paramount to business resilience, as well as how key decision makers are placing it as a high priority for the modern enterprise.

Adequate connectivity isn’t just crucial for an organization’s resilience. Respondents also believe in connectivity as fundamental element in addressing access inequalities across industries. The State of Connectivity survey found that more than 90% of organizations think free connectivity will address the digital divide and eliminate disparities in various verticals including education, healthcare, business, and government. Furthermore, and with a long-term impact on businesses, 90% of those surveyed agree that access to connectivity is essential to developing the skills required for the modern economy. In addition to this, 75% of respondents agree that rural areas are currently being negatively impacted by lack of connectivity when it comes to medical innovation.

Lastly, and having an impact across businesses and society, 62% of business leaders agreed that poor connectivity held back their sustainability projects in the last 12 months. The good news is that 93% of C-Level executives are considering IoT implementation to make their offices more energy efficient.

In response to the survey, Todd Krautkremer, chief marketing officer at Cradlepoint, stated:

The data included in the report underscores how vital adequate connectivity is for many aspects of business today. It illustrates that enterprises desire to be agile and withstand unexpected changes, progress on sustainability goals, and, perhaps above all, eliminate unplanned downtime, which costs them dearly in terms of customer and brand impact.”

    Solution Shows Vision and Innovation

Boise, Idaho — April 13, 2023Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network solutions, has been named as a Leader and Outperformer in GigaOm’s Radar Report for SD-WAN for its 5G-optimized solution. GigaOm rated Cradlepoint’s SD-WAN offerings “exceptional” in the categories of scalability, manageability, and vendor support.

Backed by Ericsson, Cradlepoint has a broad 5G business portfolio encompassing both routers and adapters with indoor and outdoor deployments optimized for spectrum layers and cellular bands,” the report explains in a summary about Cradlepoint’s strengths. “Sophisticated cloud management simplifies all aspects of the wireless WAN lifecycle, including intuitive multilayered dashboards, bulk orchestration, zero-touch deployments, over-the-air OS upgrades, and rich application programming interfaces (APIs) for integration with third-party applications,” states GigaOm analyst, Ivan McPhee.

The report specifically highlights Cradlepoint’s NetCloud Exchange (NCX) as one of the company’s strengths. An extension of Cradlepoint’s NetCloud Service, NetCloud Exchange allows enterprises to enhance the benefits of 5G with advanced SD-WAN and zero trust capabilities. As more enterprises take advantage of the ability to connect from anywhere using 5G, providing modern security and application assurance features will enhance the overall quality of experience while reducing the overall attack surface.

GigaOm’s recognition of Cradlepoint as an SD-WAN Leader and Outperformer confirms the growing importance of offering SD-WAN that provides 4G/5G optimization and cellular intelligence,” says Cradlepoint vice president of product management Soumen Chatterjee. “Few SD-WAN vendors provide a solution tailor-made for Wireless WANs, and that’s exactly what we’ve focused on building.”

5G is rapidly becoming an essential WAN infrastructure technology, enabling agile connectivity for use cases such as vehicles, IoT devices, sites, and remote work. With 5G standalone deployments on the horizon, Cradlepoint’s 5G-optimized SD-WAN solution is also a nod to the future of connectivity, due to its ability to support application-based traffic steering into network slices. This critical functionality will help carriers make network slicing a reality in the enterprise. It will also enable enterprises to take advantage of differentiated services over 5G networks, facilitating the transition of wired to wireless WANs.

Earlier this month, Cradlepoint furthered its SD-WAN and security ambitions with the acquisition of Ericom and its cloud-based security solution, ZTEdge. The move solidifies Cradlepoint’s SASE, zero trust, and cloud-based security strategies for hybrid 5G and wireline environments. The Ericom acquisition is a key part of Cradlepoint’s strategy of building a full-stack enterprise security service optimized for 5G.
